Óbidos Lagoon, Foz do Arelho, constitutes the most extensive lagoon system in Portugal, a privileged habitat of an intense and diversified fauna and flora.
Several waterfowl and migratory birds can be observed in the Lagoon. In addition to birdwatching the Lagoon is also rich in fish and shellfish as well.
In the middle ages the Lagoa, according to ancient records, extended to the foot of the Castle of the Town of Óbidos, which lends its name to it and since then has played an important commercial role.
