Not only because it is located right in the center of the beautiful and green D. Carlos I Park but partly because it is an exceptional museum that brings together significant art masterpieces, not only from José Malhoa, naturalist painter born in Caldas da Rainha but from many other contemporary masters.
The collection consists in paint works, sculpture and ceramics with high relevance in the Portugues art history.
In addition, to the permanent collection, Jose Malhoa Museum often presents temporary exhibitions among other cultural activities.
Opened in 1940, the José Malhoa Museum also has the distinction of being the first museum in Portugal dedicated to a single artist as well as being the first building designed for exhibition purposes.
Given this importance, the building itself is rated as a Public Interest structure. Here you also find some Bordalo Pinheiro works like the “Paixão de Cristo”.
